Masked female terrorists, led by the seductive and lethal Ava, are kidnapping Europe’s royalty.

A king captured in a Paris brothel—

—a prince flirting with the wrong girl—

—and Prince Freddy, 47th in line for the throne, all abducted.

Carlton is in bed with a Chinese spy in Moscow, trying to make a deal, when Ava bursts in, shoots her—and tries to kidnap him!

A motorcycle chase. Ava goes off Gorky Park Bridge and disappears under the Moskva. Oh, well, nothing to do now but have lunch.

Major MacDonald, head of MI6, suspects the Kremlin of the kidnappings. His opposite number Yuri Touchov is suddenly incommunicado.

Carlton’s job is to get to Yuri through his screen of FIS guards.

The Major also suspects that Carlton is suicidal, and has him surgically altered to keep track of him—a camera in his forehead, mics in his ears.

In fact Carlton is the victim of his invariable good luck, with women—the Major’s p.a. Emily Pluckrose adores him—and other risks, and throws himself at danger with a certain ennui.

 “Your luck will run out, Mr. Kule.”
“I can’t wait.”


Quartermaster Queensbury will not give him the Aston Martin with an ejection seat he wants, and this is no way to arrive at the casino—

—where he encounters Yuri and, at the same table, Prince Freddy. And Yuri’s wife Svetlana falls in love with him. 

And he wins all the money. It’s a bore.


Skiing with Yuri in Greenland, then Iceland’s Blue Lagoon with Yuri and Svetlana, where she arranges some alone time.

“Carlton,” shouts the Major, “do not touch that woman!” Well.


Rendezvous with a CIA agent and the head of Chinese intelligence in a sub on the floor of the South China Sea. The kidnappings are global—and only of men. Special men.


Rescue Prince Freddy from his treacherous bodyguard and the women who have bribed him. Hide the prince in a Cap Ferrat hotel.

Have lunch on the beach as Ava emerges from the sea and wades ashore.

“At last,” says Carlton, “I’ve found you.”
“You are lucky.”
“You’re the lucky one.”
“Me?”
“What is luckier than beauty?”
“What is more beautiful than luck?” 

Their fabulous lovemaking is spied on by MI6. Ah, but he’s too Kule with her. “Don’t forget to pay the bill,” he says. And he’s gone.

And she’s gone. And so is Freddy. Is he depressed because she beat him, or because he misses her?

The three leaders of the world meet in an open-air piazza where they can’t possibly be hacked, surrounded by Secret Service men—

—and are kidnapped.

But Carlton—can’t get interested. His luck has run out.

A writer sleeps with a journalist who destroys him by publishing a disastrous account of what he's like in bed, and he can save his career only by marrying her.

    In the Park Plaza bar Rick tries to pick up Evvy who, carefully assembling her sentences, explains that she's brain-damaged.  Awed, abashed, tender, he watches her depart and is joined by his agent and his editor: Rick has been paid a million-dollar advance for a novel and they're here for a press-party book launch.

    Upstairs Evvy amuses her friends with the re-tard routine this jerk at the bar actually bought as Rick comes up behind her and hears.  They exchange sarcasms.  She's a journalist covering the author of this book The Understated Stud—does he know Rick Coyne?  Sort of, he says, and as his editor makes a speech Rick puts her on, feeding her material as she fills her notebook; when he's called to the mike she realizes.

    He charms the audience but she cuts in with rapid-fire politically-correct questions and they exchange sarcasms, then insults, on camera.  He implicates her newspaper; men, he says, are coming back.  She is fired.  He appears on Letterman.

    She researches him—he's been in Europe for ten years, owes a hundred thousand in child support and faces three months in jail if he enters Connecticut—and tries to sell an article on him to Vanity Fair but the editor wants her to sleep with the understated stud and write about that. Life is hard, honey—find out if he is too.  Evvy is mortified, but her friends talk her into it, and she approaches Rick for an "interview."

    He isn't sure: he's already spent the million, he's dealing to see his estranged son, he needs book sales to pay support and his agent says no way, she'll murder you.  That night, in bed with a guest, Rick takes Evvy’s call and declines the interview as his guest screams her way over the top.

    They go out to celebrate permission to see his son and are intruded on by Evvy, who gets rid of the rival by telling her Rick has HIV.  He goes angrily home alone to find the bitter mother of his son , who offers herself to him; he alienates her further by refusing.

    At dinner with a society hostess Barbara he meets literary celebrities, including Evvy’s editor.  In bed with the hostess he is interrupted repeatedly by Evvy's voice on the answer-phone, and can't perform.  His first meeting with his twelve-year-old son goes horribly, and when Evvy shows up, provoking Rick's outrage, the kid is entirely put off.

    But at their next meeting they discover mutual tastes—dandyism (posing in mirrors as they're fitted for suits) and topless women: he sneaks Michael into a strip bar, where he is served papers by the dancer Evvy told he had HIV.

    To get Evvy off his back he agrees to the interview.  She tries to seduce him, and sarcasm does turn to flirtation, but he declines.  His son is staying with him and, oppressed by her deadline, Evvy promises to show him topless women to get another chance at Rick.  Her friends in the ballet dazzle the boy with a display, the day is a success and Rick and Evvy wind up in bed.

    But though they want it to work mood turns angular.  He takes the blame and leaves.  SNOW WHITE MEETS DROOPY! shouts the next of VF: the Understated Stud isn’t a stud at all.   The society hostess and his son’s mother concur, the tabloids scream he has AIDS, sales on his book dry up, the film option is dropped and the publishers withdraw their offer for his next novel.  Unable to make support payments he will lose access to his son. 

    Only one thing, says his agent, can save him: marry her.  He recoils, horrified, but his son agrees.  All he has to do is get a commitment, announce, nail her and bail out. 

    Now it's his turn to call her, stalk her, beg her and be repulsed.  His editor gets her editor to get Evvy to dine with him and, surrounded by reporters, her taperecorder going, he proposes and is laughed at.  But as he walks her home she says yes!  Joy, kiss—but he can't come up:  She's an old-fashioned girl.

    They go on Letterman together and fight; she almost calls it off but is offered a book deal as big as his and the world prepares for the grudge match of all time.  But his son holds him to his promise.

    On the big day he weeps in his agent’s arms.  Her bridesmaids prime her with downers.  The reception is in her Connecticut garden where he is apt to be arrested.  All pair off—his agent and her friend, his editor and hers, his son and the stripper for strip poker—except the bride and groom.  She wounds him intimately with a champagne cork, swings a wet bar towel at him and whacks the society hostess; he holds her head underwater, after which she must smile for the media.

    While the others are happily in bed the newlyweds approach the act in sinister silence.  Tense, desperate, they break through into passion—but she can't.  He accepts it; the joke's over, they've got their book contracts.  But no, she can't—with anyone!  She's—a virgin.  Her career—she just never had time!  But he musn't tell anyone—this is her worst secret!  Pause: what'll you gimme? he says.  She glances at us—putting him on. And he’s buying it!  Saxophone.

Toby travels with a woman who pays, sweet blonde bubblehead Marcie, who adores him. He’s got it made. Trouble is, her nine-year-old daughter Andrea is his mental superior, and sees him for what he is. From the novel:
Toby likes to sleep. He leaves America one step ahead of the collection agents—"Hello, Ma?" "Who is this?"—and gets by for a while in Paris giving English lessons.
But it’s a know-your-words kind of thing, he’s not really good at it. Also it’s cold. So he tries it further south as a tour guide. "Free time" is the secret. He gives them lots of "free time" to climb around on the monument, while he catches forty in the bus.

Proposed: Camilla Cleese
Marcie Harding, sweet, fresh, blonder than blonde and all heart, is a lonely widow who takes a tour in Venice. Toby abandons his group to surrender to her, and when he runs out of cash is about to abandon her. (He loves her more than he knows.) "To-bee! Let's just live on my money!" He hesitates—"Yeah?"—and relaxes into a life of late mornings and long lunches. 
Perfect—except for "the child," her nine-year-old daughter Andrea. Toby and Marcie are no smarter than anybody else. The child is smarter than anybody else. It sees Toby for what he is, and doesn't approve of him.
It would get rid of him but it sees that its mommy loves him, so it keeps him around to amuse itself with. When you’re not looking it rotates its head like Linda Blair.
When he’s hung over it comes around and disturbs his sleep so they can go pogo-sticking. Aw, you will say, it just wants to play! Control yourself.

Even less convenient, the money is held by Marcie's father-in-law, billionaire Hazelton Turnbull “Hard Turd” Harding IV. Haze too sees Toby for what he is, and finds projects into which to divert Marcie’s allowance so he can scrape Toby off.
When they hook up in Athens he spends it on a painting for the Hazelton Turnbull Harding IV Memorial Museum, and Marcie sends Toby to the gallery to get the price down. Quite by accident—really!—he steps in it. And can’t get it off. Very embarrassing.

The artist, a butch nightmare, physically attacks him. While it’s being repaired, rich old Greek patroness Hermione buys it and takes it to her island, where her teenage American granddaughter Darleen is visiting.

Marcie passes Toby off as Andrea’s tutor (this is Andrea’s idea—everything is Andrea’s idea), and Haze takes the "family" to the island to bid for the painting. Darleen flirts with Toby, Hermione attacks him with her cane, her bulldog attacks him, and Johna the butch nightmare attacks him.

Toby escapes to a portside café to get some sleep, but is awakened by his old friend Toad Fuller, an abrasive man who is nevertheless fabulously successful with women. Hard to figure. Of course, he’s rich. 
Toad has come to the island in search of the only woman he’s ever really loved, i.e. the only one who’s ever turned him down. Darleen. He has already tried to get to her at the house but Hermione set her pair of prize bulldogs on him. Toad shot one. He has it right here in a bag. The police stroll by. Toby gets up to leave.
Relax, Toad and his butler are going to row it out to sea, sink it with rocks and have drinks. "Hey, neat! I want a butler!" But the net doesn’t hold, and Toad sticks Toby with the dead dog.
The child insinuates it into the evening meal. Toby gets drunk and sits on the painting, and can’t get his ass out of it. One of the lady guests comes to his room and—well.
The child organizes Toby and Toad to burgle the painting through a skylight over the salon. In exchange, it will ingratiate Toad with Hermione, and have Haze restore Marcie’s allowance. Rock-climber Toad will be lowered in—
—but things go wrong, Toby is swung through the wrong window and lands in bed with Darleen. Everyone rushes in and looks. Despite the bungling, though, the painting is gone. Disgrace. Exile. Goodbye to Marcie and their delicious lives together.
Of course the child has the painting. And it will orchestrate the happy ending—if they can go pogo-sticking.
